The World Health Organization and the World Plumbing Council have jointly published "Health Aspects of Plumbing". This document outlines the need for suitable design, installation and maintenance of effective plumbing systems to guarantee safe access to drinking water for basic health sanitation needs.

It suggests suitable methods to avoid microbiological, chemical, physical and financial risks from drinking water and emphasizes conservation of potable supplies.

In the UK the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme has published the Water Regulations Guide, which outlines safe and effective plumbing for the UK.
